Let's Talk Turkey

Hello, thanks for reading my blog. For those of you keeping track this is blog #90.

I have a crazy story to tell. A new family bought a home on the corner across the street from our home. They moved in during the summer and we have met them and got to know them a little. The lady who moved is a widow who lost her husband last year to leukemia. She is currently living there with two of her daughters.

Monday night we went to hear the kids play at their piano recital downtown at the Weber County Library. Then we went eat at the new Javier's on Harrison. We got home just before 10 and spent the next half hour getting everyone into bed.

Little did we know that at the same time two gunmen burst through the door of our new neighbors home and proceeded to rob the family.  The men knocked on the door and asked for a Dave or David. The Seventeen year old girl cracked the door open to tell them they had the wrong home and they burst in. Luckily no one was injured during the robbery.

Both men, a Hispanic and a Caucasian, were wearing knit caps and one had his hoody pulled over his head. They asked the girls for their money and some car keys. As they burst into the door the daughter began to scream and her sister and mother began to run to the door to see what was happening. The older daughter turned to her mother and told her to call 911. The mother ran out the backdoor, so she wouldn't be trapped inside, and called the police. She ran around to the side of the house and watched the men as they took the money and keys from the girls.

The mother said from the time she called 911 to the time the police arrived was under a minute and a half. Both men got away in the stolen car.

We are all pretty freaked out about this. Things like this are not common in our neighborhood. I admit someone was murdered about two years ago but the circumstances behind that were different. The victim knew his assailant and had invited him into the home. It was a drug deal gone bad and the two men has also been involved in a sexual relationship.

This appears to be a random home invasion that happened when most of the neighbors were awake and could have seen what was happening in the home. The daughters got a good look at both men and could give descriptions of them. While the Hispanic man was with the older daughter getting the keys and money from a bedroom the younger Caucasian man told the 17-year-old that he was sorry but that if he didn't do this he was going to be killed.

It's hard for me to believe that this type of thing can happen so close to home.

It's been hard to concentrate on my work. I did some surfing to lose myself...

When I was in high school I really got into the Beatles. I own every album they have produced including singles and CD's. They were revolutionary in their use of film with their music. They are truly the forefathers of Music Video and MTV. I came across this version of their animated movie 'Yellow Submarine' and decided to share it with you today because there are few better escapes from reality that this.

According to Wikipedia, "Pepperland is a cheerful music-loving utopia located "80,000 leagues under the sea", and is named after and protected by Sergeant Pepper of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band fame. It is attacked by the music-hating Blue Meanies who seal the Band inside a musicproof sphere, then turn the Pepperlanders into statues and drain the country itself of color."

A few months ago I was watching the evening news and saw this story about a ' Truly Amazing Blind Kid'. This clip is about a blind teenager that has overcome many obstacles. His abilities are truly awesome!!

'The Atlantic' recently put out this article about 'The Top 100 most influential figures in American history'. Can you Guess who made the list?

1 Abraham Lincoln
2 George Washington
3 Thomas Jefferson
4 Franklin Delano Roosevelt
5 Alexander Hamilton
6 Benjamin Franklin
7 John Marshall
8 Martin Luther King Jr.
9 Thomas Edison
10 Woodrow Wilson

I have to disagree somewhat to this list. Although no one can deny the contribution these men have played in U.S. History, sometimes is it the villains they were opposed to who had the bigger impact. This may be better name 'The Top 100 most politically correct figures in American history'. I would rank Edison and Franklin higher than King, Marshall, and Hamilton. In fact, I'm pretty sure King, Marshall and Hamilton would not be in my top 10, however, the author make strong arguments for each person on this list.

Speaking of influential men, did you know that George Washington himself  wrote a Declaration in 1789 establishing Thanks  giving as a National Holiday? Here is the declaration in his words:

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

In celebration of Thanksgiving I thought I would share this video I found on YouTube called, 'Thanksgiving Song'.

...called 'Thanksgiving Turkey Drop'.

-------------

There is a Utah company that makes blenders. But this company has become famous because videos, called 'Will It Blend', they are posting of their blender blending out of the ordinary things.

Before you check out the other videos be sure to watch this one about Thanksgiving Dinner!

-----------------

I'd like to share with you another of my favorite comic strips called 'Moderately Confused'. That have had some great Thanksgiving strips this week.

------------

One last video I will share with you something you can do after you have stuffed yourself with Turkey and are picking your teeth before desert entitled, '5 Toothpick And A Star'.

--------------

Speaking of stars I was reading this article about a 'Firecracker Galaxy' that Offers a Double Blast.

The article said, "Astronomers have stumbled onto two supernovae letting loose there just months apart. The recent twin supernovae were detected by the NASA Swift satellite observatory on June 19 and Nov. 5 of this year. In the images, the supernovae are visible on either side of the bright galaxy center."
-------------

If stars eating stars isn't interesting what about this NASA Image of the Day called 'Reflection Nebula'?

The description says, "Like fog around a street lamp, a reflection nebula shines only because the light from an embedded source illuminates its dust; the nebula does not emit any visible light of its own."
------------

Well I don't know about you but here's where I will be spending Thanksgiving this year.

I used the 'Longitude and Latitude Finder' to find the location of my home. Check it out and leave me a message with the coordinates of where you will be spending Thanksgiving.
----------------

That's all for today. Happy Thanksgiving I will post again next week.

GO COUGARS!!!
